I have embedded several Excel charts in a PowerPoint file. Every month I update the charts in Exel and I want the updated charts to appear when I open the PowerPoint presentation.

    How can I do that?

You don't want to embed the graphics in PP, you want to link it like this:-

1.Click on the EXCEL chart to highlight it, then:-

    STRG-C

    - to copy it.

2.Click on the PP sheet you want to link your chart to, then do the following:

    home page

    clipboard group

Click on the drop down arrow below:-

    To take

    - then click on: -

    insert special. . .

    He:-

    insert special

    - The window should open.

    3.Soy:-

    insert special

    - In the window, click on the radio button named: -

    insert the link

    - This should cause: -

    Microsoft Office Excel-Diagrammobjekt

    - will be highlighted in blue in the field with the name: -

    And:

    Click on:-

    OK

4.You have now linked your EXCEL diagram to your PP presentation.

TO CHECK WHAT YOU FOUND ABOVE

    5.Close your PP presentation.

6.Make a change to the EXCEL chart and save it.

    7.Reopen your PP presentation.

If you do this, a warning should appear.

    In this alert, click on:-

    update links

The change you just made in EXCEL should now be reflected in PP.

    Save the change to PP.

    Hola,

Your request could be through Paste Special and paste the Excel file as an object.

Paste Special: Copy charts from Excel > Paste to PowerPoint > Paste Special > Paste Link

Insert the Excel file as an object: Click the Insert tab > Object > Create from file (Note: see the link).

Then you could update the excel file and it will update in PowerPoint as well.

This is how I added the graphics to the file. However, I don't get the warning message. In PP, when I click on the chart, then select the Design tab (under Chart Tools), and then refresh the data, Excel opens. However, the source file in Excel will NOT open. When I try to close Excel I get a warning screen asking if I want to save the changes to the source file (which I can't see).

    I also have office 2010

Between my point number 6 and my point number 7, leave EXCEL open (not closed).

If you open the PP presentation you should get the warning at this point (I do and it works fine here).

    It's working now

I don't need to click on the diagram (and subsequent steps) you mention.

It says you can't see the source file, but your source file is EXCEL, isn't it? (So how can you not see it?).

This is a monthly repeating process, so I have to quit both apps until I have to update them again next month.

Anyway, I currently have both open and making changes to the excel charts and the data in DB is unchanged. When I click the "Refresh Data" button, it tries to open a different version of the file (and gives me an error message. Because of this, I suspect the problem has to do with the file paths.

The only solution I see is to delete the existing linked chart and replace it with the current one. To me that defeats the purpose.

The source file is definitely Excel. I don't know how I can't see it.

Are the files randomly on a network?

If you want to save them locally, follow my procedure and then save them back to the network drive.

    Hola,

Because you provided more information, you didn't want to recreate the Excel file and the PowerPoint file.

But I guess the problem may be because the two files have some problem. So could you give me the full error message when you update the data?

We can focus on troubleshooting the two files.

While it's not pretty to just link and update everything automatically, you should consider this rather automated alternative.

My situation is slightly different as we reuse the source charts (dynamic source range selection) instead of creating many charts in the source workbook. The following code takes the selected chart and image in PowerPoint and copies/resizes it from a new version of Excel to PPT. We then update the chart source and insert the following record into another PPT slide.

You can change this by naming each of your PPT images with a unique name and naming each Excel chart with the corresponding name. Instead of using the selected graphics and images, simply scroll through all the graphics and search the active PPT for an appropriately named image, then replace it with the middle part of this code.

Just an alternative to consider if you can't get the shortcut to work.

(make sure to set a reference to PPT in VBA)

    Sub ExcelChartReplacesExistingPowerPointChartAsPicture()

I had the same problem as you, I thought that I had followed the same way to insert the graphic in power point. However, what it had done was link and therefore would not link the file.

In PowerPoint 2013. You can go to the "Insert" tab and then click "Object" and select the file you want. This even works over a network. Click the "LINK" button. or do "Paste Special" operation if it's just a chart or part of a table.

Now just right click on the object. You can "edit" it. (The Excel file will open.) Make the changes you want and then. Go back to PowerPoint. Right click on the object again and click Update Link.

If you made changes to your Excel file before opening PowerPoint. It should give you a warning and ask if you want to update the links. You can say yes or no, if it says no you can always right click and refresh links to update it.
